The Laundry Project
The Laundry Project is based on six articles of clothing-- a long black night gown, full black slip, lavender half slip, white camisole, pink strapless lace bra, and a white sequined top. I received the clothing from a friend who worked with a storage company that handled some of Kiki Smith's possessions. My friend was given a bag full of clothes belonging to Kiki and her sister and offered me the clothes, knowing I was an artist and an admirer of Kiki Smith’s work. After trying on many pieces, I took only the clothes that fit me, primarily undergarments, and a small leather clutch. Because the clothes had been in storage for so long, they smelled strongly of mothballs. In my attempt to clean the clothes in the laundry, I ruined the beautiful lace on the pieces almost immediately--white and pink turning yellow, lavender to gray. This failed attempt at a mundane domestic task was the departure point for the project. The Laundry Project, a multi-media installation using projections, sound, clothing, sculpture, wallpaper, and photographs, touches on themes of femininity, sexuality, domesticity, loss, and desire.
